Hair masks are the fastest way to rejuvenate tired locks. Forget expensive salon treatments and make your own with these super easy, cheap and effective home remedies for countless hair types. Take a magazine into your bathroom to pass the time while your hair laps up these delicious treatments.
Apple cider vinegar and lemon – For Oily Hair; Grate a lemon’s rind and combine it with 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar. Massage the mix into your scalp and leave for 15 minutes before washing out.
Apple cider vinegar, honey and yoghurt – For Oily Hair; Mix1/2 cup of yoghurt, a teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. Once the mixture is combined, apply to your scalp and let it sit for 15 minutes before washing it out.
Aloe vera mask – For Dry Hair;Combine 1/4 cup of aloe very gel with juice from half a lemon and five drops of Argan oil. You can find Argan oil in most pharmacies. Wash your hair as normal, and apply this mask as a substitute for conditioner.
Papaya and yoghurt mask – For Dry Hair; Skin one papaya mash it until it’s completely smooth, then add 1/2 a cup of plain yogurt and stir to combine. Paste the mixture and wrap your hair in plastic wrap, leaving it sit for 45 minutes before washing out.
Mayo moisture mask – For Dry Hair; Add a few drops of essential oil to 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise. Paste the mixture on your head and leave for 15-20 minutes before washing your hair as usual.
Honey and olive oil mask – For Dry Hair; Combine 4 table spoons of honey with 6 table spoons of olive oil. Apply the sticky mixture and wrap your hair in a shower cap, plastic bag or plastic wrap and let it sit for up to 30 minutes. Wash your hair as normal.
Coconut oil and maple syrup – More Shine; Add 2 table spoons of coconut oil to 2 table spoons of maple syrup and combine. If it’s winter, you may need to melt the coconut oil first. Cover your hair with the mixture and wrap your hair in plastic wrap. Let it sit for 15-30 minutes, then wash as normal.
Beer, oil and egg mask – Flat Hair; Now this one’s a bit odd, but the yeast in the beer can help plump up limp locks. Add 1/2 cup of flat beer to 1 teaspoon of sunflower oil (or olive oil) and a raw egg. Rinse your hair first, then apply the mask and let it sit for 15 minutes. Wash your hair with slightly cooler water than normal if possible.
Egg and milk mask – Damaged Hair; Firstly, get an egg and separate the yolk from the white. Whip the yolk with a fork, then add 1 cup of milk and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Squeeze in the juice of 1 lemon and stir with a fork. Massage the mixture into your scalp then cover your hair with plastic wrap and let it sit for 15 minutes. Wash your hair out as normal.
Honey and almond oil mask – Damaged Hair; Combine 2 tablespoons of honey, 1 tablespoon of almond oil and 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar until a cohesive mixture forms. Apply to your hair, particularly coating your ends as these are the areas where most damage occurs. Leave for an hour then wash out.
Avocado and honey mask – Damaged Hair; Mash 1 very ripe avocado until it’s smooth with 1 tablespoon of honey and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Combine the mix with a fork or use a food processor for an ultra-smooth mixture. Apply to your hair and cover with plastic wrap for one hour.
Banana, yoghurt and honey mask – Frizzy Hair; Combine half a ripe banana, completely mashed, with 2 tablespoons of honey and 3 drops of almond oil. Paste the mixture onto your damp hair and leave it for 20 minutes under plastic wrap before washing as normal.
Mayo, egg and honey mask – Curly Hair; Combine 1 egg, 2 teaspoons of mayonnaise, 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of honey together in a blender. Apply to your locks and massage into your scalp. Cover your hair in plastic wrap and let the mixture sit for 30 minutes. Wash out as normal.
Avocado and almond oil – Curly Hair; Mash an avocado, add 2 tablespoons of almond oil and combine. Paste onto your hair and let it sit for 30 minutes. It’s ultra hydrating, you’ll love this one.
Brown sugar and olive oil – Curly Hair; For adding shine and hydration, this one needs a bit of cooking. Gently heat the mixture in a saucepan until smooth, then wait for it to cool. Apply to your hair and wash out after 15 minutes.
Castor, almond, olive and coconut oil – Curly Hair; Whisk one teaspoon of each oil, then apply to the hair and fasten with plastic wrap. Leave for 15 minutes and wash out.
Yoghurt, strawberries and baking soda – Curly Hair; Mash six strawberries, one teaspoon of baking soda and one tablespoon of yogurt and combine into a paste. Apply to your hair and wash out as normal.
