Got a Load of Rubbish? Autumn might officially be here now but it is a fantastic time to get our outside spaces sorted. Don’t just stop with the garden though, we are talking the garage, basement and the loft too!
When was the last time you had a good old clear out? It might shock you if you start to really think about it. We tend to use the roof space or basement as a dumping ground for things we just don’t know what to do with. This means we have a mixture of useful things and complete and utter junk!
So, where do you start? First thing to do is consider what you are going to do with any of your unwanted items. You may decide to donate some to charity or the local school. You might hold a garage sale with “All Items Must Go” but at some point you are going to have to consider the junk. There are a few options for getting rid of the rubbish we don’t want. Hire a skip, do a tip run yourself or hire a company to come and collect it for you. The latter option may work best as it saves you countless trips to and from the dump. Check out the pricing at Dirt Cheap Rubbish Removal and once you have a planned route for all your unwanted items, it’s time to get stuck in.
Next you need to consider how you are going to store things. So it’s worth checking out IKEA or your local store to see what solutions they have. Plastic boxes are easier to stack and can be labelled, meaning you have better access to the things you decide to keep. Storing things in cardboard boxes is a mistake. You may find the contents are affected by damp or even little creatures who decide to make a lovely nest.
The best way to get organised is to start at the top and work your way down. So head to your loft if you have one and leave the garden till last. Try to be systematic about things. Work one box at a time and be quite brutal with what you throw away. It’s worth investing in rubble bags to put all the bits and bobs you are definitely throwing away. Then using colour coded waste bags to put aside things to sell, things to give to charity or items your family may like to keep.
Work like this through all of your areas and through your garden. It isn’t going to be a quick fix but once you have achieved a little organisation you will feel so much lighter and able to take on the year ahead. Keep a notebook with an itinerary of all the items and where they are. This will make it so much easier if you decide to move. It will also help you stay on top of any new bits you want to stick into storage throughout the year to avoid another load of rubbish.
You may also find you have enough room for a little extension! Now, there’s an idea!
