There are so many different ski resorts in Australia and throughout the world that it can sometimes be hard to know which is the best ski resort to take the kids? We have compiled a list with 17 great family skiing holidays that cater to families and aim to give you and your family a wonderful snow experience:
Thredbo, NSW – There is more for families than just skiing here. Family fun nights and Fireworks and Flare Runs are just part of this family oriented ski resort. Thredbo has a great village feel that makes it very family friendly. Where to stay…Snowgoose Apartments – It’s close to Thredbo village, it’s modern, spacious and has great views of the mountains.
Jindabyne, NSW – At the base of the NSW ski fields, Jindabyne isn’t usually covered in snow during winter, so you can drive around with the kids and easily get dinner. About a 40 min drive to Thredbo or Perisher Blue ski resorts (you will need to hire chains when it is snowing) or simply catch the Snowy Mountain Ski Tube. You will find better priced accommodation here which can make it easier for many families to enjoy a skiing holiday. Where to stay…Aspen Court 5 – This is a terrific 3 bedroom apartment. It’s roomy and warm and great for families. Carpark is a bit of a tight squeeze but my family stayed here and we though it was great!
Falls Creek, VIC – Falls Creek has a variety of things to keep the kids entertained on and off the slopes. Events include stage shows, competitions and bungy trampolines that operate throughout winter so even if they get tired of skiing, their is always something else to keep the kids happy. Where to stay… QT Falls Creek – Modern, clean and gorgeous. Your self contained apartment may even have a hot tub and with 3 bedroom apartments available, it’s great family accommodation with a touch of luxury.
The Remarkables, New Zealand – Boasting some of NZ’s best beginner terrain as well as top black diamond runs, there is something for everyone here. They also have great family eating options and a great kids club. Where to stay…Remarkables Lodge – Why not spoil yourself with this luxury accommodation the whole family will love. Located just 2 minutes from the ski fields, you can relax in your deep claw footed bathtub or soak in the hydrotherapy spa pool after a fun family day skiing. The rooms are spacious and stylish and will make it a very memorable family holiday.
Whistler Blackcomb, Canada – There is pretty much everything you could wish for here for families. There is a separate family area on the snow, there is a children’s adventure park and even a tree fort. They even have older kids covered with many organised events and the Ziptrek (a zipline flight over Whistler). A great family atmosphere means this is a terrific place to ski with the family. Where to stay… Pan Pacific Whistler Mountainside – They’ve got it all, heated swimming pools, buffet breakfast and great rooms. It’s worth just taking a look.
Mount Hotham, VIC – Kids snow mobiles…need I say more? Mount Hotham offers 15 minute snow mobile rides for kids ($30) so you can watch your little ones have fun zooming around on the snow Where to stay…Moritz Apartments – Enjoy ski-to-door accommodation with rooms that accommodate for families of 6. They are self-contained so you can eat breakfast and lunch in your room or enjoy the many restaurants close by.
Perisher, NSW – If your a skiing first timer then check out Tube Town where kids (inc the big kids) can come down Front Valley in an inflatable tube or a tobbogin. No experience required. Also, no need to walk back up as there is a tow to get you there. Where to stay…Valhalla Perisher – You get a delicious buffet breakfast to start the day and then end the day in front of the cosy fireplace.
Nozawa Onsen, Japan – The best part about Nozawa Onsen is that it will give you a traditional Japanese experience. There is a charming village and amazing hot springs but what is great for families is that the ski instructors and baby sitters speak English. You’ll feel like to are in another world here and your family is sure to have a wonderful time. Where to stay…Lodge Denbey – This lodge offers both Japanese and Western style rooms and food so you can decide how much culture your family wants. They also have great hot springs to sooth your muscles after a long day skiing.
Cardrona, New Zealand – There are great ski schools and child care options here so even if you have a toddler or baby, you can still enjoy a ski, knowing the little ones are having fun too. Where to stay…Cardrona Bliss – With Playstation 2 and a large screen TV, the kids will be happy in these self contained units. You’ll be close to the ski fields and their is a shop onsite so you’ll also be happy.
Smiggins, NSW – Smiggins is part of the greater Perisher Blue resort but it is smaller than Perisher, making it great for families. There is a shuttle bus to connect you to Perisher so you don’t need to miss out if you want the bigger slopes. Where to stay…Smiggins Hotel & Chalet Apartments – You will be right in the action and close to everything but best of all there is a kid’s club, kid’s karaoke and weekly magicians. Perfect for families.
Avoriaz, France – The winner of awards for Best Family Resort, Avoriaz is a great choice for families looking to ski in Europe. It is 100% ski in/ski out so there is no traffic (so kids are safer). They also have the world class Village des Enfants (kids club). They offer indoor and outdoor activities and they tailor activities to each child, offering a safe environment to learn to ski or simply play indoors or in the activity playground. They also have special kids events over the Christmas period that will make your stay memorable. Where to stay…Hotel des Dromonts – Splash out and stay at this idilic hotel and enjoy a truly French experience. Enjoy the French cuisine at the onsite restaurant, have a cocktail near the fireplace or simply stare out the window at the gorgeous mountain view from your room.
Guthega, NSW – Guthega is also part of the large Perisher Blue resort but it offers a smaller village feel. A great option if there isn’t a huge amount of snow as there are great mountain bike tracks and fishing. This is also where you want to be if you love cross-country or alpine skiing. Where to stay…Guthega Inn – Take in spectacular mountain views overlooking Guthega Dam.
Sun Peaks, Canada – This is a resort tailored for families. It’s so safe that they claim the kids can roam the shops themselves. They have great facilities including a skating rink, bungee trampoline and tube park. They also have a variety of restaurants with great kids options and then they have the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory! Where to stay…Residence at the Sun Peaks Grand – All apartments have a full kitchen and have loads of space. There is a games room for the kids and free wifi. You’ll also be close to the ski village and slopes.
Methvan/Mt Hutt, New Zealand – Currently, Methvan has a deal going where kids under 10 can stay, eat and ski for free with a paying adult! Check out the deal for all the fine print. Where to stay… Ski Time Lodge – This is one of a few properties that is part of the deal but would be great if your had older kids too. There is a restaurant onsite, parking and terrific rooms.
Mt Buller, VIC – Have you ever dreamed of taking a dog sled across the snow? Mt Buller offers Sled Dog Tours. A great family experience. There are also great ‘non skiing’ activities to keep the kids occupied when the skiing gets too much, such as Gnome Roam (go in search of the gnome), a Cinema and a sports hall for some inside play. Where to stay…Hotel Pension Grimus – You’ll be close to all the amenities. It is centrally located next to the Bourke Street ski run and just 50m from the loading station of the new Abom six-seater chairlift. You’ll also be 100m from the Ski School, Buller Kids Centre and Creche. There is also a Day Spa next door so you can get some “me time”.
Beaver Creek, USA – This is the perfect ski resort if you have teens as they have BC <3 T2 (Beaver Creek Loves Teens Too). This is an amazing evening programme to keep teens happy once they are off the ski fields. They can party with pizza and other teens and learn great ski tricks and loads of other fun things. Don’t worry, younger kids are covered too. There are lots of activities for them as well. Also, everyone gets chic chip cookies at 3pm everyday…I’m there. Where to stay…Park Plaza Beaver Creek – It has everything a family could need with large rooms to accommodate all the kids, a fire place to keep you warm and a washing machine/dryer to help keep your clothes fresh. There is also an indoor pool if you just can’t take any more skiing.
Porters, New Zealand – A fantastic, family oriented resort that is only 1hr from Christchurch. The best part for families is that kids under 7 years old always ski for free while they have a special offer at the moment where kids 7-12 can ski for free if an adult also buys a lift ticket. That’s great value. Also, if you are a family of beginners, try their $190 family ski lesson for 2 adults and 2 youths. Where to stay…Sumner Re Treat – Stay in nearby Christchurch so that it the holiday doesn’t just have to be about the snow. Check out this historic city and stay in comfort.
