The September school holidays are apon us so plan ahead and don’t let the kids drive you nuts! School holidays can be a stressful time when you are trying to balance the budget. We have 17 bright ideas for things to do with the kids these school holidays in Melbourne that won’t break the bank because they are FREE! ArtPlay Backyard @ ArtPlayHouse -25, 27, 29 September, 2, 4, 6 October, 10.30am to 12.30pm. Fun outdoor artistic play with textures and various materials. All ages.
Baby Bounce @ State Library Victoria– Wednesdays, 10.30am – 11.am. Here is a great free activity for the little ones. A fun session of stories, songs & rhymes! Activities are designed to help very young children to explore language. Ages under 3 years.
Junior Rangers (Snakes, Skinks, Sunlight) @Ross Straw Field, Royal Park – 23 – 27 September, 10am – 12pm. Learn about reptiles and how they adapt to different environments and light. All ages.
Junior Rangers (Mysterious Mammals )@ Australian Native Gardens, Royal Park – 30 September – 4 October 10am – 12pm. Hunt for evidence of the furry, four-legged creatures hidden in the tree tops and grasslands, and learn about the strange and wonderful animals that once roamed Royal Park. This is a great free activity for animal lovers. Ages 5+
Parklands Animal Farm @ Queen Victoria Markets – 1 October, 10am – 12pm. Face Painting and baby animals kids can learn about and interact with. This free school holiday activity is sure to be loved by all kids. All ages.
Puppets at Fed Square (Electric Puppet) @ Federation Square – 23, 24, 29, 30 September and 1 October, two sessions per day: 10am – 12pm and 2pm – 4pm. Create and play with your own puppets at this fun, interactive workshop.
QV Butterfly Experience – 4 – 6 October, 10am – 5pm. Visit the beautiful QV Glasshouse and have your very butterfly experience. There will also be giveaways, balloons and face painting. A gold coin donation would be appreciated. All ages.
Family Fun Day @ Riverslide Skate Park – 24 September, 10.30am – 3pm. The YMCA will be hosting a day of free skateboard lessons and activities at Riverslide Skate Park. Go along and give it a go or simply watch in amazement from the sidelines and enjoy the free BBQ. All ages.
Scarecrow Making @ Federation Square – Weekends, 12pm – 12.30pm. Stuff and decorate your very own scarecrow for the Pop Up veggie patch. Bookings essential and weather permitting but sounds like lots of fun. Ages 4+
Experience the Infinity Dome @ Royal Botanical Gardens – 21-23 September 12pm-5pm (check website as session times vary per day). The Infinity Dome is a huge inflatable planetarium style dome designed specifically for projecting video content inside, creating an exciting and immersive experience. Immerse yourself in the spectacular visuals from within the Infinity Dome. Ages 4+
Wild Wigs For Kids @ National Gallery of Victoria – 21st September – 6th October (exc Tuesdays) 10am – 4pm. This is a great one for kids who love to dress up. Be inspired by the 17th and 18th century and try on wigs and costumes. There is also a great activity trail to download and explore the exhibition. Ages 3+
City Circle Tram – Trams run approximately every twelve minutes between 10am and 6pm Sunday to Wednesday and extended hours, 10am – 9pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday. To catch the free City Circle Tram service (route number 35), simply board the tram at any of the specially marked stops on the route. This is a great activity to explore the city as there is a running commentary on what you are passing but it is also great for little ones who love transport. All Ages.
The Old Treasury Building – Sunday to Friday 10am-4pm. There are 3 permanent exhibitions housed in this grand building built in 1862. It is widely considered to be one of the finest examples of Renaissance Revival architecture in Australia. Take the kids to see Australian history and step back in time. All ages.
Children’s Garden @ Royal Botanical Gardens – Everyday during school holidays 10am – sunset. This is a perfect place to take kids who love exploring and getting their hands dirty. There are water features and statues and its all for kids to play and have fun in. All ages.
Puppets at Fed Square (Wedhus Gembel) @ Federation Square – 2nd – 5th October, Two performances per day, 2pm and 6pm. Get along to this amazing puppetry performance by Melbourne’s own puppet masters, Snuff Puppets. In a partnership with Indonesian artists, Snuff Puppets performs a theatrical spectacle based on an Indonesian mythical story. A great adventure and wonderful characters will keep kids of all ages mesmerised. All ages.
Everyone Can Dance @ ArtPlayHouse – 6th October, noon to 3.45pm. There are 4 different styles of music to try out: African, Swing, Hip Hop and Bollywood. You can go to one or all of these 45 min sessions. Ages 5-12 plus family.
Make A Book @ State Library Victoria – 30 September, 1 and 3 October, 10.30am – 12pm. Visit the ‘Free, secular and democratic’ exhibition, then make your own travel book to take home! Ages 5-10.
