How Not To Give Up on Your Goals

Posted January 31, 2019 by Sue Prichard

At the start of the year, we can all be so hopeful. But then just thirty days or a month or six weeks later, we can feel quite the opposite. Because it can be hard to make changes that stick. To go after your goals. To uproot everything you know and start to do things differently. And before long, your whole Year Of You aims seem impossible. And then you give up. You write off your resolutions and your aims and everything that you hoped to achieve, because you fell at the first hurdle. And what’s the point of trying to get back on track, because you’ve failed anyway – right? Well, no, not necessarily.

Sometimes, this seems like the only option, because it’s all you know. And when you get stuck, you will always revert back to your highest level of training. So if you’ve always given up on your goals after a set period of time, it’s likely that you’ll fall victim to that same pattern again and again. But, the good news is, things don’t have to be that way. You can choose to make changes that stick. You can decide that you’re going to rewire your way of thinking and actually MAKE your goals a reality. You can not only smash through your goals, but make new ones off of the back of them.

But to do that, you have to first prepare to go get those goals. Whether you’ve already fallen off the wagon with your Year Of You or your New Year’s Resolutions or anything else, of whether you’ve not set anything yet, here’s how not to give up on your goals.

1. Be In The Right Frame Of Mind

Now, one of the main reasons for why you just don’t seem to reach your goals, is because you might not be in the right frame of mind. And mindset is everything. You need to be open to your goals and open to change too. A positive state of mind can really help you here.

2. Be Intentional

You also need to be intentional too. You have to make sure that you are actively working towards those goals. Don’t just set them and then forget about them. You have to actively take steps towards reaching those goals, otherwise you will just fail.

3. Know What You Want

Then, one of the most important things that you can do here, is really make sure that you know what you want in life. Because sometimes, the reason why you can’t lose the weight or get the promotion or earn more money, is because it’s not really what you want. So, then you need to make sure that you are working towards things that you really do want in life.

4. Align With Your Goals

But then, you need to work on your goal alignment. For this, it’s important for you to be able to make sure that your thoughts and your actions match your goals. So, in order words, you’re not saying one thing and then doing another. But you are getting yourself in line and you are moving towards those goals. Because this is often the pivotal moment that can stop you from letting go and just giving up.

5. Set Specific Goals

And, when it comes to those goals, you’re definitely going to want to make sure that you are being specific. That you know exactly how much weight you want to lose or what kind of promotion you want or how much you need to save for a house – no matter the goal, if you can get more specific on what you’re doing, the better chance you’ll have at making it happen.

6. Take Action

This one seems really simple, but it’s often the sole reason why people do not reach their goals. And it’s because they just do nothing about the goals. So you have to take action. You need to know what you’ve got to do to achieve your goals, and they need to be actionable steps you can follow to get close to achieving them.

7. Do Some Research

You might even want to think about doing some research around your goals so that you know what will help your health or your career or your finances, or anything that you do. Maybe you want to find career options or look into hibiscus tea or how to manage your money. The more you can research and add things to the list, it’s going to allow you to keep moving forward.

8. Keep Things Front Of Mind

But then something that is going to allow you to keep the momentum up, is to keep your goals in the front of your mind. For this, making a vision board and putting it somewhere prominent can help as it will allow you to see representations of your goals each morning. Or maybe you want to write out your goals each morning so that you can be conscious of them through the day and really align your actions with them. Either way, if you are keeping things front of mind, you’ll find it easy to start accomplish them.

9. Track How You’re Doing

It’s also a good idea for you to keep track of how you’re doing. Because when you see that you’re getting closer to your goals, it’s very motivating. And if you can see that you’re not there yet, you can reassess and then start to move things in the right direction.

10. Keep Taking Steps

And that’s really all there is to it. You just need to keep on taking those steps, and moving through the motions. After you’ve started and you’ve taken that first step, you’ll realize that it’s not all that scary after all. Achieving your goals and actually seeing changes to your life, your career, your health, your finances – it’s all exciting. And, you deserve it. So just keep moving forward, keep working on your action points, and you’ll soon wonder how you ever gave up on anything in the past!
