For land based beings, water plays a huge role in our general health and wellbeing. After all, our bodies themselves are composed of up to 60% water. But how can we best use this element to our personal advantage? Well, there are three key ways that H2O can keep us functioning healthily, maintain our strength and offer relaxation: drinking, water based exercise and spa experiences. Here are a few reasons to engage with each area.

Stay Hydrated

We’re all familiar with the importance of staying hydrated throughout the day and night, but many of us still fail to take heed of the failsafe advice so often given out by health professionals: attempt to drink 3.7 litres a day if you are male and 2.7 litres a day if you are female. Each day you lose water in the obvious ways, but also through perspiration and breathing too! So make sure you are always sufficiently hydrated to operate best.

Work Out

There are numerous water based workouts out there, but let’s stick to the most popular option for now, as this is more likely to be available and easily accessible at your local pool. Swimming is one of the best forms of complete body workout out there. So if you’re looking to improve your overall fitness and strength, skill, and confidence in the water, this may well be the answer to all of your wishes. Whether you’re doing a gentle breaststroke, or an intense butterfly stroke, you will be using numerous muscles throughout your body. If you’re looking to lose a little weight, it’s good to bear in mind that this form of exercise can burn around 200 calories in half an hour, which is, on average, more than walking, jogging, running, or cycling. If you don’t know how to swim or are merely a little uncomfortable in regards to your technique, you should consider swimming classes. These will have a professional coaches who will be able to help you to improve your skill, allowing you to improve each and every lesson.

Relax

Now, exercise may be one of the best ways to feel healthier. It makes you fit and more active. However, there are plenty of health benefits to be had from moderate relaxation too. Especially when there’s water involved. Take a jacuzzi as an example. The warm to hot water relaxes your muscles, easing aches and pains. The pulsating water also acts as a form of massage, further kneading out tension from your muscles and easing sore joints. Turkish baths are also a great water based form of relaxation that is beneficial for your overall health and wellbeing. The heat of the water dilates the blood vessels which improves circulation. Your body’s pores also dilate, allowing for deep cleansing of the skin. The steam promotes cell renewal, which will leave you with a healthy glow too. Just remember to monitor the temperature and water pressure in jacuzzis and Turkish baths, as you don’t want to become overheated. If you begin to feel faint at any time, do not stay in the water.

So, there you have it. Just a few of the ways that water can help to improve your general health and wellbeing. There are plenty more uses for it out there, but simply trying out one or two of these simple steps will leave you feeling all the better.
