Here at 17 Bright Ideas, we are all about finding great things and letting you know about them. This weeks road test is …well, naturally Sugar Free Dark Chocolate Melts. We’ve been testing them out over the past week and now we can let you know why we think they are a bright idea!
Here are the facts: …well, naturally chocolate is 70% cocoa and is naturally sweetened by stevia, which is a plant based ingredient with zero calories. It has natural antioxidants and low GI.
We used the Sugar Free Dark Chocolate Melts in two recipes this week: Sugar Free Choc Chip Cookies (Made by Vicki) and Chocolate Cake (Made by Sue). The recipes were created by cooking extraordinaire and chocolate-enthusiast, Tanya Bartolini.

As you can see from the pic, there are some great ingredients in this recipe but what we noticed the most was what ingredients we left out. No eggs, flour or added sugar. This would make these a great snack for someone with allergies or someone trying to be more healthy, but you don’t have to give up on TASTE!
And in the end, they turned out really well. They were very morish but their was no guilt. You’ve got to love that.
Chocolate Cake (click for recipe)
This chocolate cake was a big hit when we made it. It is rich and moist, just like you want from a good chocolate cake. We also loved that it used almond meal instead of flour and had a great chocolate taste (but wasn’t too sweet).
The Roadtest – We know that you are pretty busy so here is what we loved in 17 Bright Ideas style:
Naturally Sugar Free – Using stevia to naturally sweeten the chocolate so you don’t have to worry about an artificial sweetener. They taste just as sweet as normal dark chocolate but they don’t have sugar.
Less calories – Because stevia has zero calories, you’re not consuming the calories from sugar. This means you can have more than you would normally allow yourself.
70% cocoa – The higher the percentage of chocolate, the better the chocolate. When ever you hear celebrity chefs talking about chocolate, they all say to use 70%. You get a strong chocolate taste that works great in cooking. If you like to eat a bit of chocolate at night, a 70% chocolate can give you that chocolate hit faster too, compared to a milk chocolate.
Melt well – We melted the chocolate when making the ganache for the chocolate cake. As you can see from the photos, it had a lovely consistency as the chocolate melted very easily, just like regular chocolate.
Hold their shape – We used these chocolate melts in the cookies and they kept their shape after being in the oven, just like regular cooking chic chip melts.
Is it a Bright Idea?
We really think so! There are very few people who can say no to chocolate and with the rise of obesity and artificial food, a product that is naturally sweetened with zero calorie Stevia but still has a great taste is a very bright ideas.
