Want to shed kilos for summer? If you are anything like me then you are either on a diet, just finished a diet or trying to find the inspiration to go on a diet! According to an article on the BBC website, 1 in 4 people in UK are trying to lose weight at any time and I am sure that number would translate to Australia. If you are thinking of shedding a few kilos, then here are Vicki’s 17 Bright Ideas To Shed Kilos For Summer. (REMEMBER, see your doctor first before starting any diet):
17 Day Diet – We couldn’t go past this diet for obvious reasons. This diet, unfortunately doesn’t last for only 17 days but rather has 4 cycles, each for 17 days. It’s all about metabolic confusion – not letting your body get into a routine and mixing it up. It was designed by Dr Mike and there are books and eating plans available to help you along so you might be able to shed kilos for summer.
5:2 Fast Diet – This is the diet of the moment and bases itself on the principle of ‘intermediate fasting’. In basic terms, you eat normally on 5 days and you have a very controlled eating plan on 2 days in a week. This is great if you socialise a lot or if you just can’t stick to something all week but it does require a bit of will power on the 2 diet days.
Weight Watchers – This long running diet program allocates points to each food and allows you to eat what you like as long as you eat the correct amount of points. Weight Watchers also encourage attending their meetings to help keep you motivated and learn tips from the leader and other dieters. They have over the phone meetings, online options and even one on one meetings so there is something to fit into everyones life. This is a good diet if you socialise quite a bit and enjoy a bit of freedom. There are also internet and app tools to help on your weight loss journey. This is my personal fav to shed kilos for summer.
Atkins – A carbohydrate controlled eating plan comprising of four key phases designed to help you lose weight and keep it off in the long term. It has been around for over 40 years and also has online tools to help you stay motivated. You can even buy the great tasting snack bars in Coles & Woolworths I’ve tried this diet and find that you don’t get as hungry but I’ve never done it for long enough to really test it out.
Jenny Craig – Targeting both men & women, Jenny Craig is a combination of pre-prepared food and one-on-one weekly meetings with a coach to help you stay motivated and possibly shed kilos for summer. They have been around for around 30 years and have several celebrity endorsements such as Magda Szubanski, Dame Edna & Mel B.
Light ‘n Easy/ Diet Factory – Both these companies home deliver pre-prepared food. You can choose the calorie intake you want as well as choosing from a complete 7 day diet program to only dinners. This is great if you don’t want to do any food planning but still want to lose weight.
Dukan – Rumoured to be the diet Kate Middleton went on before her big day, this diet originated in France and might be the one for you to shed kilos for summer. The Dukan 4 phase diet offers an eating plan that returns to the foods which founded the human species, those eaten by primitive man, the hunter-gatherers, proteins and vegetables.
Detox – There are an abundance of detox diets on offer. They tend to be more short-term fixes where you drink a special liquid (eg. Lemon Detox Diet) with the aim of cleaning out toxins from your body or losing weight rapidly. These are not really recommended for long term, sustainable weight loss but might be good to help lose a few kilos before a big party or shed kilos for summer.
Quick Trim – This is a range of meal replacement shakes, appetite suppressant tablets and detox drinks. Kim Kardashian is the celebrity endorser of this brand and will be interesting to see if she gets her pre-baby body back using Quick Trim? Shed kilos for summer and feel good with this diet? Let us know if you’ve tried it.
The FAST Diet – This is a relatively new diet on the scene but sounds interesting – who wouldn’t look into something called FAST? FAST actually stands for Families Always Succeed Together and encourages everyone to eat better, exercise more, and hold themselves accountable for maintaining their individual health while encouraging others in the family to stick to their own diet and exercise regimen. It claims to have a success rate of 8x the national average so let us know if you’ve given it a try to shed kilos for summer for you and your family.
CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet – This is a high protein diet designed by the CSIRO to assist in long term weight loss and management. First published in 2005, this diet claims to have 800,000 Australians having been on this clinically developed structured eating plan. The books include all the recipes for the plan for you to shed kilos for summer.
Michelle Bridges 12WBT – Michelle Bridges, of Ch10 The Biggest Loser fame, guides you through a 12 weeks eating and exercise plan. You sign up over the internet and Michelle gives you support and encouragement. There are even prizes to win and an end of program party. Michelle wants to help you shed kilos for summer and beyond.
Paleo Diet – The basic premise of this ‘very popular right now’ diet that could help you shed kilos for summer is to eat like a cavewoman. It claims to be the world’s healthiest diet, as it is is “based upon the fundamental concept that the optimal diet is the one to which we are genetically adapted.” You eat lots of unprocessed food – meat and vegetables – foods that our ancestors would hunt, fish or gather rather than cultivate.
The Cabbage Soup Diet – This is a 7 day strict diet plan for fast weight loss and is not recommended for long term use but great for that need to get into that special outfit. It is also known as the Mayo Clinic Diet. As the name suggests, there is cabbage soup involved but you also get to eat a combination of fruit, vegetables, beef and milk. There is also plenty of water to drink.
South Beach Diet – This diet has 3 phases and lots of online tools and recipes. It encourages you to eat carbohydrates with a low GI and foods rich in unsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acid. Alcohol is not permitted on this diet. Is this the one that will help you shed kilos for summer?
Tony Ferguson – This diet includes low GI principals, online, over the phone and in store (Tony Ferguson Chemists) support as well as shakes, bars and soups to purchase. This could be a good diet if you need support to help with your will power and finally shed kilos for summer.
Measure Up Government Website – This is a government initiative to help Australians reduce their weight and increase their health. It has a lot of educational literature, tools, motivations and recipes to access. There is a free 12 week plan and a app to help you make better food choices.
